Supervision services

Individual, group and trainee supervision, available online and in person. Everything we do is shaped around you and the clients you work with.

What supervision with me looks like

Supervision is a professional requirement, but at its best it is much more than that. It's protected time to step back from the work, think it through with someone experienced, and return to your clients refreshed.

Individual supervision

Regular one-to-one sessions, usually monthly or fortnightly depending on your caseload. We'll explore your client work, ethical questions, your own responses and your professional development.

  • 50 minute sessions
  • Online or in person
  • Flexible frequency to meet your requirements

Group supervision

Small groups of [three to four] practitioners meeting regularly. Groups offer a richness of perspective and a sense of community that many counsellors in private practice value greatly.

  • 90 minute or two-hour sessions
  • Carefully contracted and facilitated
  • A cost-effective way to meet your hours

Trainee supervision

I welcome students on counselling courses who need a supervisor for their placement. I'll provide the reports and attendance records your course requires and support you through the particular pressures of training.

  • Meets [BACP] course requirements
  • Reduced trainee rate
  • Support with placement paperwork

What to expect

Before we begin, we'll have a free introductory conversation so you can ask questions and get a sense of how I work. If we decide to go ahead, we'll agree a written supervision contract covering confidentiality, frequency, fees, cancellations and what each of us can expect from the other.

In sessions, you bring what you need to bring. That might be a client you're finding difficult, a question of ethics or boundaries, something that has stirred up strong feelings, or simply a wish to reflect on where your practice is heading. I'll listen, ask questions, offer my perspective where it's useful and help you reach your own conclusions.

Supervision is confidential, within the limits set out in the [BACP Ethical Framework] and the law. I keep brief notes of our sessions and I'm happy to provide letters confirming your supervision for accreditation or course purposes.

Online sessions take place over [Zoom], which works well for most supervisees and makes scheduling easier. In-person sessions are available at [venue / area]. Many supervisees choose a mix of both.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have supervision?

That depends on your professional body, your course and how much client work you do. [BACP] recommends a minimum of 1.5 hours per month for practising counsellors. We'll agree a frequency that meets your requirements and suits your caseload.

Do you supervise counsellors from different modalities?

Yes. My own practice is [integrative], and I enjoy working with supervisees from a range of approaches. What matters most is that supervision supports you to work safely and well within your own model.

Can I have supervision online?

Yes. Most of my supervisees meet me online, and it works very well. In-person sessions are also available in [Town].

What is the introductory call for?

It's a free, informal conversation of about 20 minutes, so we can both get a sense of whether we'd work well together. There is no obligation to continue.

Will you provide reports for my course or accreditation?

Yes. I can complete placement reports, attendance records and supervisor's letters for accreditation applications.

What happens if I need to cancel?

I ask for [48 hours'] notice where possible. Sessions cancelled with less notice are normally charged in full, though I understand that emergencies happen.
